Sacrum

Though not a part of the lumbar spine, the sacrum is important because of its relationship to the lumbar spine. The sacrum comes together effectively to form one bone from 5 fused vertebrae. As part of the pelvis, the sacrum is the base of the spine and connects the spine to the body structure as a whole. This triangular shaped structure consists of different parts:

  • Sacral Ala - the “wings” of the sacrum that connect the sacrum to the pelvis
  • Coccyx - the tailbone
  • Sacroiliac Joints - at the top portion of the pelvis. These joints are responsible for holding the weight of the rotation and turning of the middle body.
